Bimini is an island in the Bahamas, an archipelago located 50 miles east of Miami, Florida. Near its coast, at a depth of only 20 feet (6 meters) a large stone path is visible. It is comprised of large, flat rocks cut at straight angles and arranged in a straight line.
There are some who believe the crystal blue waters near Bimini may hold evidence that Atlantis was a real place and not just a myth. The earliest mention of Atlantis comes from ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Plato, who described Atlantis as a cursed island that was sunk by the wrath of the gods. But what if Plato’s account was more than just a parable warning against power abuse and disrespecting the gods? Was Atlantis a real place and if so, where could we find its ruins?
According to several researchers, the underwater structure called the Bimini Road might hold the key to uncovering the long lost mythical land. It was discovered in 1968 by underwater archaeologist Joseph M. Valentine and his team. They initially uncovered one structure but subsequent dives revealed the existence of two additional linear formations.
Each ‘road’ measures half a mile in length and is made of large stones measuring up to 13 feet (4 meters) across. In 2006, the Sci Fi Channel produced a documentary about the legendary island and its connection with the Bimini Road. A team of divers made discovered a secondary structure made up of similar rocks buried beneath the first layer of stones. This has led some to believe the road was a actually a large protective wall.
An interesting twist to the story is American mysticist Edgar Cayce’s prediction regarding the discovery of Atlantis. In 1938, during one of his famous trances, Cayce said: A portion of the temples may yet be discovered under the slime of ages and sea water near Bimini… Expect it in ‘68 or ‘69 – not so far away.”
While the origin and meaning of ‘Bimini’ is lost, the word appears in ancient Egyptian, loosely translating to ‘homage to the soul of Min’. Min was the divinity that protected travelers to far away lands. Could there be a connection between Atlantis, ancient Egypt and the Bimini Road? There are several theories that suggest the Egyptian pyramids and the Giza Sphinx are much older than presumed and were actually built by Atlanteans.
Throughout history, many civilizations have been completely wiped out by catastrophes and survived through legends, only to be rediscovered hundreds or thousands of years later. Many believe the same scenario applies or will be applied to Atlantis but until then, the mystery remains.
