The implications of climate change are severe. So why are we far less worried than we should be?
Corrupt politicians with murky agendas exert their influence. Lobbyists ensure the voice of major corporations are heard loud and clear. Laws get passed without public attention and mainstream media reports what it’s being told to.
Statistics are skewed and trust in media polls is at an all-time low. For good reason too, as cherry-picking has become the norm. These conditions make up our precariously balanced world. It seems all it needs is a bump in the wrong direction and everything tips over.
How many of us feel comfortable in a society deliberately mislead into partial or, if things spiral out of control, total annihilation?
Under the Freedom Of Information Act, Greenpeace and watchdog group Climate Investigations Center obtained documents pointing once again to the unhealthy relationship between ‘Big Oil’ and crooked scientists. Over the past decade, Dr. Wei-Hock Soon of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has received more than $1.2 million from major players of the fossil fuel industry.
Breaking one ethical guideline after another, Dr. Soon often claimed global warming was caused by variations in the sun’s energy output. Through most of his scientific papers, he deliberately helped corporations block legislation that could have hurt their business. He also did his best to hide the fact that he was on their payroll.
Even though information has been suppressed or manipulated since man could write, recent events show that, for the sake of our home world, it should stop.
The 1960s tobacco wars as well as the leaded gasoline scandal were the culmination of the same thing: corporations having scientists in their pockets. The plethora of conditions caused or aggravated by tobacco are known today, yet 50 years ago, cigarettes were advertised as being harmless.
Hundreds of thousands of cases of lead poisoning finally led to the removal of tetraethyl lead from gasoline, but not before lives were lost. And it’s still happening, right under our noses.
The fact that Big Oil is willing to pay big money to keep a lid on things means we should definitely reconsider taking their word on it.
